Diablo 2: Resurrected is actually getting two alpha tests

We’re getting more than one Diablo 2: Resurrected alpha tests.

Though the existence of Diablo 2: Resurrected was leaked well ahead of time, it was still nice to officially see the game on stage at BlizzConline in February.

The even bigger news was that Resurrected isn’t years away like Diablo 4: it’s actually targeting release this year. Blizzard also announced that it’s going to be hosting a technical alpha for the remake soon, and opened sign-ups for it.

It now appears that there’s going to be more than one opportunity for the general public to play Diablo 2: Resurrected ahead of launch. Lead producer Chris Lena confirmed to PCGamesN that the team is actually planning two alpha tests, the first focusing entirely on single-player, whereas the other will test multiplayer.

“We’re going to start with a single-player technical alpha, and then we’ll have a second technical alpha after that, which is kind of multiplayer and stress testing,” said Lena.

Outside of all the technical reasons you might want to hold a tech test, Blizzard is particularly interested in feedback on game balance. From the sound of things, the studio is undecided on whether keeping certain elements unchanged would maintain the original vision, or ruin the experience of new players unfamiliar with them. Lena, however, did not offer specifics.

Neither of the two planned alphas have dates, but we’re hoping the first one at least would start sooner rather than later. The full game arrives this year on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch.
