Last week marked Zelda’s 35th anniversary and apart from the reveal of Skyward Sword HD and some themed Joy-Con, in terms of full games, there’s been nothing else announced.
It’s left a lot of fans wondering what’s going on – with many celebrating the big occasion by themselves. So, what is happening? Industry insider and VentureBeat reporter, Jeff Grubb, has published a story stating that Nintendo will reveal more about its Zelda celebrations once Skyward Sword is out of the way.
According to Jeff, it’s all comes down to marketing. Right now, Nintendo doesn’t want to overlap Mario’s 35th-anniversary celebrations, which end on 31st March 2021, and the ‘sole’ focus on Skyward Sword until July will ensure it gets the sales and attention. Along with this, it means Nintendo’s efforts to revive the 2011 Wii release aren’t overshadowed by other Zelda games.
“The first consideration when it comes to the timing of a Zelda anniversary is Mario. Nintendo’s 35th anniversary celebration for Super Mario is still ongoing. It’s unlikely that Nintendo would want celebrations for Zelda and Mario to overlap. It would get more from each if it put some separation between the two events.”
“This is still marketing. And Nintendo will want to position The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD out in front. This is one of the biggest reasons that Nintendo didn’t talk about other Zelda beyond Skyward Sword HD in its latest Direct video event. The company doesn’t want other Zelda games to distract from its attempts to bring back Skyward Sword.”
“Sure, it could’ve released Wind Waker and Twilight Princess at the same time, but the company wants Zelda fans all focused on Skyward Sword. So instead of creating a situation where other Zelda releases on Switch cannibalize sales that could’ve gone to Skyward Sword, Nintendo will create a steady cadence of releases to celebrate the series. That will start with Skyward Sword HD in July, but we should hear about what is coming soon after that this summer.”
If you haven’t already heard, last week – right after the most recent Nintendo Direct, VGC journalist Andy Robinson told Nintendo fans to be on the lookout for Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, if they weren’t all that interested in Skyward Sword HD.
