Nintendo Ignored Zelda’s 35th Anniversary This Weekend, But Fans Are Celebrating In Style

Nintendo

Yesterday, 21st February, marked the 35th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, the very first game in one of the industry’s most successful, popular, and important series. Despite heavily celebrating Mario’s 35th last year with remastered games, merchandise, and more, Nintendo has been surprisingly quiet on the Zelda front, failing to even acknowledge the historic date at all on social media as it passed by. Pretty odd, huh?

So far in this milestone year, the only Zelda news we’ve had is the announcement of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, a remaster of the Wii original for Nintendo Switch (and some lovely Joy-Con to go with it). It’s a welcome release for those who may have missed the original, but the game wasn’t actually announced as part of any anniversary celebrations – it was likely planned to launch this year regardless.

We’re sure big things are coming (Nintendo would be silly to ignore it completely, right?), but while the company remains silent, fans have been taking it upon themselves to celebrate the series in style. We’ve seen a huge number of posts online honouring the franchise with some spectacular pieces of fan art doing the rounds, so we thought we’d share just a few of our favourites below.

Of course, we’ve been doing our fair bit of celebrating right here on Nintendo Life, too. If you missed it, make sure to check out our complete ranking of Zelda games from worst to best, as well as the beginning of our new ‘Zelda 35th Anniversary’ feature series which will fondly look back over each mainline game over the coming weeks.

What Zelda-related things are you hoping to see this year? Will we eventually get the Breath of the Wild 2 news we’ve all been waiting for? Let us know in the comments.
